There is something about the start of football season that makes home feel a little cozier.
The windows are open, something good is cooking, and for a few hours on Sunday we give ourselves permission to slow down. My husband turns on the games, my son plays nearby, and I usually find my way into the kitchen to make something everyone can snack on throughout the afternoon.
It’s simple, but I’m starting to realize that this is how family traditions begin.
Not always with something carefully planned or passed down for generations, but with the little things you do again and again until everyone starts to expect them. The first football Sundays of fall. Something warm coming out of the oven. Everyone gathered in the living room. Me inevitably making too much food.
I may never be the person keeping track of every play, but I will happily claim game-day food as my contribution to the tradition.
These Crispy Baked Honey Hot Wings, adapted from Whisper of Yum, are exactly the kind of recipe that belongs in our Sunday rotation. They’re crispy without needing to be fried, coated in a sticky honey hot sauce that is sweet with just the right amount of heat, and easy enough that making them doesn’t take me away from the afternoon.
Because for me, football season isn’t really only about football. It’s one of those little markers that tells us a new season has arrived and gives our family another ritual to come home to.
The Little Traditions That Make a Season
Fall comes with plenty of big traditions.
There are pumpkin patches, apple picking, decorating the house, Halloween, Thanksgiving, and eventually all of the excitement that comes with the holiday season.
But lately, I think I love the smaller traditions even more.
They’re the things that probably wouldn’t make it onto a seasonal bucket list but somehow become part of what a season feels like in your home.
Football playing in the background on Sunday afternoons.
The windows cracked open when the first cool breeze finally arrives.
Something warm cooking in the kitchen.
Everyone staying in comfortable clothes a little longer than usual.
A snack or meal that starts appearing often enough that your family begins to associate it with that time of year.
Those are the traditions I find myself wanting to create more of now.
Hayden is still little, and he certainly isn’t going to remember every football Sunday we spend together right now. But someday, I hope there are parts of this season that simply feel familiar to him.
Maybe it will be hearing a football game in the background.
Maybe it will be everyone gathering in the living room.
Maybe it will be the smell of something good coming from the kitchen.
There is something special about realizing that the ordinary things we repeat inside our homes can eventually become the memories and traditions our families carry with them.
And if crispy honey hot wings become part of ours, I’m perfectly happy with that.

The Secret to Crispy Oven-Baked Wings
If you want crispy wings without pulling out a fryer, there are a few simple things that make a big difference.
Dry the Wings Really Well
The first and probably most important step is getting as much moisture off of the chicken skin as possible.
Use paper towels to thoroughly pat the wings dry before adding any seasoning.
Removing that extra moisture helps the skin crisp and brown in the oven rather than steaming.
There’s no need to rinse the raw chicken. Simply remove it from the package and pat it dry.
Use Baking Powder
A small amount of aluminum-free baking powder is another trick that helps create crispier oven-baked wings.
It changes the surface of the chicken skin as it cooks, helping it brown and develop that crispy exterior we’re looking for.
Make sure you are using baking powder and not baking soda. Baking soda can leave an unpleasant flavor behind.
Bake the Wings on a Wire Rack
Placing the wings on a wire rack set inside a rimmed baking sheet allows hot air to circulate around them.
That means the bottoms of the wings aren’t sitting directly against the baking sheet, which helps them cook and crisp more evenly.
I also like to lightly grease the wire rack before adding the wings to prevent sticking.
Crispy Baked Honey Hot Wings
Sweet, spicy, sticky, and perfectly crispy, these oven-baked honey hot wings are an easy game-day recipe made for slow football Sundays at home.
Prep Time: 15 minutes
Cook Time: Approximately 45–50 minutes
Servings: Approximately 4
Ingredients
For the Crispy Baked Wings
- 2 pounds party wings
- 1½ tablespoons garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 tablespoon aluminum-free baking powder
- 1 tablespoon paprika
- 2 teaspoons kosher salt
- 1 teaspoon freshly cracked black pepper
For the Honey Hot Sauce
- ½ cup honey
- ⅓ cup Frank’s RedHot Sauce
- 3½ tablespoons salted butter
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
Instructions
- Remove the chicken wings from the refrigerator about 30 minutes before cooking. Use paper towels to thoroughly pat the wings dry.
- Position an oven rack in the upper-middle portion of the oven and preheat the oven to 425°F.
- Place a wire rack inside a large rimmed baking sheet and lightly grease the rack.
- In a small bowl, combine the garlic powder, onion powder, baking powder, paprika, kosher salt, and black pepper.
- Add the dried wings to a large mixing bowl. Sprinkle the seasoning mixture over the chicken and toss until the wings are evenly coated.
- Arrange the seasoned wings in a single layer on the prepared wire rack, leaving a little space between each piece.
- Bake at 425°F for 35 minutes.
- Flip the wings and increase the oven temperature to 450°F. Continue baking for approximately 10–15 minutes, or until the wings are golden and crispy and the chicken has reached an internal temperature of at least 165°F.
- While the wings finish cooking, prepare the honey hot sauce. Add the butter, honey, Frank’s RedHot Sauce, and garlic powder to a small saucepan over medium heat.
- Heat the mixture to a gentle simmer, whisking as the butter melts. Allow the sauce to cook for about 2 minutes, then remove it from the heat.
- Transfer the cooked wings to a large mixing bowl.
- Pour the warm honey hot sauce over the wings and toss until every piece is evenly coated.
- Serve immediately with ranch, blue cheese dressing, or your favorite game-day sides.

How to Make the Wings Milder or Spicier
One of the nice things about honey hot sauce is how easy it is to adjust.
If you prefer milder wings, start with less hot sauce or add a little extra honey.
For more heat, add additional Frank’s RedHot or a small pinch of cayenne pepper to the sauce.
You can also bake all of the wings according to the recipe and leave some unsauced. Serve the honey hot sauce on the side so everyone can decide how much they want.
That’s especially helpful if you’re serving a group with different spice preferences.
What to Serve With Honey Hot Wings
For an easy football Sunday spread, serve the wings alongside a few simple snacks and sides.
Some of our favorites include:
- Celery sticks
- Carrot sticks
- Ranch dressing
- Blue cheese dressing
- Homemade potato wedges
- French fries
- Sweet potato fries
- Macaroni and cheese
- Coleslaw
- Soft pretzel bites
- A simple veggie tray
- Chips and dip
You definitely don’t need an elaborate menu.
That is actually part of what I love about football food. Put out a tray of wings, a couple of easy sides, and something to dip them in, and everyone is happy to graze throughout the afternoon.
Can I Make Honey Hot Wings Ahead of Time?
These wings are best shortly after being tossed with the honey hot sauce because that’s when the skin will be at its crispiest.
You can still do a little prep ahead of time.
The dry seasoning mixture can be combined earlier in the day, and the honey hot sauce can also be prepared ahead and refrigerated.
When you’re ready to serve it, gently warm the sauce on the stove until smooth.
If necessary, you can also bake the wings ahead and reheat them in a 400°F oven until they are hot and crispy again.
For the best texture, wait to toss the wings in the sauce until just before serving.
How to Store Leftover Wings
Store leftover honey hot wings in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to three days.
The Best Way to Reheat Wings
For crispy leftovers, I recommend reheating wings in the oven or air fryer instead of the microwave.
Reheat them in a 400°F oven until warmed through and crisp again.
You can also use an air fryer if you have one.
The microwave will work when you’re short on time, but the skin will be much softer.
These wings honestly looked even more delicious after I reheated them in the air fryer.
An Ordinary Sunday Worth Repeating
Football gives us an excuse to stay home for a while, make something delicious, settle into the house we’re building a life in, and let the weekend move just a little more slowly before Monday comes.
So if you’re adding these crispy baked honey hot wings to your own football Sunday tradition or you simply make them because you’re craving something sweet, spicy, and crispy, I hope they give you one more reason to gather at home and enjoy the season you’re in.
