I have wanted to try one of those meal-kit delivery boxes forever! There are so many out there now, HelloFresh, Blue Apron, the list goes on. Well, I recently had a coupon code for HelloFresh, so I decided it was finally time. I ended up getting my first box for about $10.
Here’s how it works:
There are a few different plans based on how many people live in your household (2 or 4) and how many meals you want per week (2 to 4). I went with the 2 meals per week for 2 people, my boyfriend and I. Without a coupon plans start at $49.99 per week.
Each week HelloFresh puts out 8 unique recipes that you can choose to include in your box of meals. You pick however many meals you decided on, and they get delivered right to your doorstep in an insulated box that keeps your ingredients refrigerated.
Everything you need to make the meals comes in the box. The ingredients are separated per meal, so you won’t get things confused. Each meal comes with a detailed recipe card that includes color photos and easy to follow, step-by-step by instructions.
I did enjoy receiving my box of meals. I mean who doesn’t love coming home to a big box on their doorstep. I loved that I didn’t have to think about what to make for dinner, because it was already planned out.
Here are my overall thoughts on my HelloFresh experience:
Pros
- Fun for a date night
- Try something new
- Good flavors
- Easy to make
- Convenient and simple delivery
Cons
- Small portions
- Expensive – more than I typically spend on groceries for the week. Believe or not, I can typically get all of my groceries for the week for about the same price, $50. This includes breakfast, lunch, dinner, and leftovers from meals. So, for me, I don’t think the HelloFresh box is worth it long term.
I think there are other sources for finding new and creative recipes such as blogs and Pinterest. This will help you get out of a cooking rut or experiment with new recipes for a whole lot cheaper.

All the Pinterest recipes!!! Yeah I’m in the same boat as you on this one… Portions were too small for my husband and I and way too expensive per meal. I’d love to hear some of your favorite weekly meals! I’m doing a post soon myself about Hello Fresh and my thoughts on food services in general.

That is definitely pricey, 50$ for 2 meals is a lot. Thank you for the honest review!

I’m glad you also found the portions to be small. I don’t eat a lot, so when they seem small to me, I know my husband must be starving!

I thought the same thing when I did some research on it. The price was a bit high for such small portions. I can stretch out $50 way more than that.

These types of services always look like they’d be a fun date night but I just can’t ever get over the price. Maybe once in a while when they’ll be ingredients included that I would never use otherwise. It’s always nice to switch things up.
