Change of Season Closet Tips

Living in a small apartment, I don’t have the best closet space. Currently, I share my bedroom closet with my boyfriend, and by share I mean I take up most of the closet, and I give him a small corner in the back. Regardless, I don’t have enough room to keep both my spring/summer clothes with my fall/winter gear.

When the seasons change, I have to reorganize. I pack up my spring/summer clothes in those vacuum space-saving bags and put my fall/winter clothes back in the closet. (Side note – I feel like New Jersey missed fall altogether and went straight into winter. Is anyone else experiencing this?)

Cleaning out your closet can be a daunting task; (which is why I put it off this year. I’ve been without a coat for a week!) so I’m sharing my tips with you below!

1. Enlist help.

I was lucky enough to have my mom offer to come help me switch out my closet. Not only was it nice having someone else to help with the physical efforts of moving stuff, but she also was a great help with making decisions on what to keep and what to toss.

2. Purge items before you put them in storage.

Before you pack away the items you won’t be wearing this season, assess them. If you answer no, for the following questions, it’s time to toss or donate.

Does it fit?
Is it fashionable?
Did you wear it last season?
Do you still like the item?

3. Create piles for sorting.

As you’re sorting through, create piles of what you’re keeping, donating, selling, or tossing. There are so many companies out there that make it so easy to donate or sell your clothes; it’s almost inexcusable to throw them in the trash.

4. Consider changing your hangers.

If you can, consider buying the thin felt hangers. This will save space and allow you to hang more clothes.

5. Clean your clothes before you store them.

Cleaning your clothes before you put them away for a few months will help preserve them and keep unwanted pests away.

6. Clean your closet before putting this seasons items in.

Take advantage of your closet being empty (or less full) and vacuum any dust or dirt out.

7. Plan before you place your clothes.

Strategy is key. Before hanging up clothes in your closet, plan out where everything is going to go. You don’t want to put in all the effort of switching your seasonal items, to be left with an unorganized mess! Put together like items like tanks, sweaters, pants, etc. This will help you stay organized throughout the season as you do laundry.
