Baked mac and cheese is the ultimate comfort food. It’s also perfect for the winter and holiday season. When my family comes over for the holidays I have to make 3 pounds of this stuff! But don’t worry the recipe I have below is for one pound of cheesy, baked delicious.
Here’s what you’ll need:
- 1 lb. pasta of your choice (I used Cavatappi)
- ½ cup of butter
- ½ cup of flour
- 4 cups of milk
- 6 cups of freshly shredded sharp or white Cheddar
- sea salt
- pepper
- 2 Tablespoons of butter
- ½ cup of panko bread crumbs
Cook your choice of pasta according to the package.
Melt the half cup of butter in a large pan over medium heat. Gently sprinkle your flour, whisking for 2-3 minutes. Season with salt and pepper.
Slowly add your milk. Continuously whisk while bringing to a low boil until thick. Once thick, remove from heat.
Grease a 9 x 13 baking dish. Add pasta and top with the shredded cheese.
Pour you thickened cream sauce over the pasta and cheese and stir till cheese is melted.
Melt butter over medium heat add panko bread crumbs and stir until golden brown.
Add crumbs to mac and cheese.
Bake at 325 degrees for 15 minutes.
I broil mine on low for a few minutes to make my breadcrumbs extra crispy.
What’s your favorite comfort food?

Yum Food! Good, it’s in a large quantity too. I often use wholemeal pasta to substitute and throw in bits of greens like parsley, rocket (arugula) or a small amount of spinach. Can’t help myself! Looks great 🙂
