Every year when fall rolls around, I get the itch to make our house feel a little cozier.
I love fall. I love the first cool mornings, opening the windows, baking something pumpkin, and slowly making our home feel ready for the season. But somewhere along the way, I think social media has made seasonal decorating feel like it needs to be a complete home makeover.
A new set of pillows. New blankets. New pumpkins. New dishes. A perfectly styled front porch. Somehow, there is always something else we could buy.
And while I love scrolling through a beautiful fall home as much as anyone, that’s just not realistic for me.
I don’t want to buy an entirely new collection of decor every September. I want to pull out things I already own, add a few seasonal touches, bake something good, make the house smell amazing, and enjoy our home.
Especially in this season of life, I’m learning that making our house feel special doesn’t have to mean doing everything at once.
So instead of a full fall home makeover, these are five simple ways I’m bringing a little bit of fall into our home this year.
1. Bake Something That Makes the Whole House Smell Like Fall
For me, making a home feel seasonal starts in the kitchen.
There is something about having pumpkin bread baking in the oven on a cool day that instantly makes the entire house feel like fall. You don’t have to decorate a single thing when the kitchen smells like cinnamon, pumpkin and warm chocolate.
My Pumpkin Banana Bread is one of the recipes I’ve already started making this season. It’s cozy, easy and makes two loaves, which is perfect because one never seems to last very long in our house.
Throughout the season, I’ll swap in other fall favorites too. Soups, game-day food, cozy dinners and baked treats are just as much a part of making our home feel like fall as the pumpkins sitting on the counter.
2. Change the Scents Around the House
Scent might be one of the easiest ways to change the feeling of your home without buying any decor at all.
I’ve been reaching for warmer essential oils in my diffuser instead of the lighter scents I gravitate toward during spring and summer.
A Few Easy Fall Diffuser Blends
I already had most of these oils on hand, so I’ve been playing around with different combinations depending on the room and the kind of cozy mood I want.
Here are a few of the fall diffuser blends I’ve been using:
Cozy Fall Bedroom
3 drops Cedarwood
2 drops Bergamot
2 drops Vanilla
1 drop Frankincense
Warm Fall Home
3 drops Vanilla
2 drops Cinnamon Bark
1 drop Clove
2 drops Bergamot
I especially like this one in our kitchen and living room since they’re one big open space.
Fall Woods
3 drops Cedarwood
2 drops Sandalwood
2 drops Bergamot
1 drop Frankincense

And when I don’t feel like mixing anything, I also have REVIVE’s Pumpkin Pie and Sugar Cookies blends. A few drops of either one is probably the easiest way to make the house smell like fall.
I also love making simmer pots once the weather cools down. Fruit, spices and herbs simmering away on the stove make the entire house smell incredible, and I love that I can use simple ingredients from the grocery store.
It’s such a small change, but scent does so much to set the mood of our home for the season.
3. Add a Few Cozy Layers
This might be the easiest one of all.
Instead of replacing all of our pillows and bedding with something specifically made for fall, I’m looking for little ways to make the things we already have feel cozier.
A throw blanket at the end of our bed. An extra blanket draped over the couch. Maybe swapping a lightweight summer textile for something with a little more texture.
You don’t necessarily need a blanket covered in pumpkins for it to feel like fall. Sometimes simply adding warmer textures and layers is enough to make a room feel completely different.
And the best part is that these are pieces we can keep using well beyond fall.
4. Decorate With What We Already Have
I love decorating our house, and I’m definitely going to put out pumpkins and little fall touches. But I’m trying to get away from the idea that a new season means I need a new haul.
Most of my fall decor will be the same things you’ve probably seen in our home before.
I’m pulling out what we already own first and finding new places to use it. A few pumpkins on a shelf, some seasonal stems, a little moment on the kitchen counter. Sometimes simply moving something to a different room or styling it differently makes it feel new again.
If I find one or two things I genuinely love and know I’ll use for years, I may add them. But I’m not trying to transform every corner of our house just because it’s a new season.
I want our home to feel like our home in the fall, not like I replaced everything we own with seasonal decor.
5. Bring a Little Fall to the Front Porch
The front porch is one place where I love leaning into the season a little more.
A wreath, pumpkins, mums or a few other simple touches can completely change the entrance to a home without needing to decorate every room inside.
And this is something I’m letting happen slowly too.
I don’t need to have the perfectly finished fall porch the minute Fall arrives. I’ll add things as I find them and as we get further into the season. Eventually there will probably be pumpkins involved, because I have absolutely no self-control around a good pumpkin display.
For now, I’m enjoying watching it come together.
Making Home Feel Like Fall Without Buying a Whole New Home
I’m certainly not against buying seasonal decor. I love home decor, and sometimes finding a new piece you absolutely love is part of the fun.
I just don’t think we need to feel like we have to.
It’s so easy to open Instagram or Pinterest and feel like everyone has an entirely new home every season. New pillows arrive. A giant decor haul gets unpacked. Every room gets transformed. And suddenly the few pumpkins you’ve owned for five years don’t feel quite as exciting anymore.
But real homes don’t have to work that way.
Use the pumpkins you’ve had forever. Pull an old blanket out of the closet. Bake something pumpkin. Turn on your diffuser. Pick up a mum for the porch when you’re at the grocery store.
Making your home feel special for a season doesn’t have to be expensive or elaborate.
I’m trying to enjoy the slow process of making our house a home, and I think that applies to the seasons too. A few little changes are more than enough to make it feel like fall around here.
What is the first thing you do to make your home feel like fall?
