August Bucket List: 12 Simple Ways to Savor the Last Weeks of Summer

There is something about August that always makes me want to slow down.

The days are still long, but I know they won’t stay that way forever. Before summer slips away and another season begins, I want to be intentional about soaking up these ordinary moments with my son.

Motherhood has shown me just how quickly time passes. It feels like yesterday I was bringing home a tiny newborn, and now my son is on the move, exploring, and discovering the world around him. I can’t slow time down, but I can choose to be present for it.

Instead of rushing from one thing to the next or feeling like we have to fill every weekend with elaborate plans, I just want to enjoy the little moments that make up this season of life.

That’s why I love creating a seasonal bucket list each year. It’s less about checking things off and more about making room for the moments that become our favorite memories.

I want to teach my son that joy doesn’t have to come from extravagant vacations or expensive outings.

Sometimes it’s watching the sunset.

Sometimes it’s picking fresh produce at the farmers market.

Sometimes it’s eating popsicles on the porch after dinner.

These are the little traditions I hope we’ll come back to year after year. The kind that make each season feel special and give him a childhood of simple but meaningful memories.

If you’re looking for August bucket list ideas to enjoy with your family, here are a few of the things we’re hoping to do before summer comes to a close.

1. Go on an Evening Walk

Evening walks have become one of my favorite parts of summer. The air starts to cool down, dinner is behind us, and there isn’t anywhere we need to be. It gives us a chance to slow down together before bedtime. I love the conversations my husband and I get to have, and I always find myself noticing the beautiful colors in the sky as day fades into night.

2. Watch the Sunset

It’s amazing how often we miss something as beautiful as a sunset because we’re busy doing dishes or getting ready for bed. This August, I want to make time to stop, look up, and enjoy it together.

3. Make Homemade Popsicles

Homemade popsicles just feel like summer. Whether they’re made with fresh fruit, yogurt, or whatever we have on hand, they’re a fun little tradition I hope my son remembers when he thinks back on summers at home.

4. Have a Bonfire and Roast S’mores

There is something about sitting around a fire that makes everyone slow down. Sticky marshmallows, smoky clothes, and conversations with good friends and family are some of my favorite memories.

5. Visit the Farmers Market

This one had to make the list. I love walking through the farmers market and seeing what’s in season. Fresh flowers, ripe tomatoes, sweet corn… it always inspires me to cook a little differently and appreciate the season we’re in.

6. Go Thrifting

One of my favorite ways to spend a slow afternoon. Maybe we’ll find a basket for the house, a book for my son, or nothing at all. Half the fun is just wandering together.

7. Pack a Picnic

I honestly can’t remember the last time I had a picnic, but I know it’s been years. When I lived in my apartment, I loved spreading out a blanket in the courtyard just to sit outside, read a book, and enjoy the fresh air. Now I can picture my son and me sitting on a blanket together, sharing a few snacks and enjoying the fresh air.

8. Visit the Library

The library has become one of my favorite free places to visit with my son. I love watching him pull books off the shelves, turning pages together, and bringing home a new stack of stories to read throughout the week.

9. Buy Fresh Flowers

Fresh flowers are one of my favorite little ways to make our home feel special. Whether they’re from the grocery store or the farmers market, they instantly brighten my kitchen and make me smile every time I walk by.

10. Play in the Sprinkler or Water Table

There is something wonderfully nostalgic about a sprinkler on a hot August afternoon. I hope years from now my son remembers laughing, running barefoot through the grass, and not having a care in the world.

11. Grab Ice Cream From a Local Shop

A quick trip for ice cream after dinner turns an ordinary weekday into something worth remembering

12. Visit a Sunflower Field

Sunflowers always feel like summer’s last big celebration before fall arrives. I can’t think of a better place to soak up a little more sunshine before the seasons change.

More Than a Bucket List

I know we probably won’t check off every single thing on this list.

And that’s okay.

This isn’t about being productive or creating the “perfect” summer.

It’s just a little reminder for myself to look up from the laundry, put my phone down a little more often, and say yes to the ordinary moments while my son is still little.

Because I know one day i’ll blink and this season of life will be over.

I hope when he looks back on his childhood, he doesn’t remember a calendar packed with activities.

I hope he remembers homemade popsicles on warm afternoons, library books before nap time, sunsets after dinner, and Saturday mornings wandering the farmers market together.

Those are the memories I want to build because they’re ours.

And maybe that’s what intentional motherhood looks like…finding joy in the ordinary and choosing to be fully present while these little years are here.

I hope this list inspires you to slow down and enjoy whatever this season looks like for your family.

Maybe you’ll check off every idea.

Maybe you’ll only have time for an evening walk and one sunset before summer ends.

Either way, those moments matter.

My hope is that some of these little joys become traditions your family looks forward to year after year, just like I hope they will for ours.

Here’s to slowing down, living in the moment, and making the most of these sweet August days.

Happy August. 🀍
