Banana Pudding (The Easy, No-Bake, Postpartum Version That Got Us Through Those Early Days)
There are certain foods that become part of your story without you even realizing it.
For me, banana pudding is one of those foods.
In the early days of postpartum when everything felt crazy, magical, and exhausting in the same breath, my husband and I started this little ritual. After we finally got the baby down for the night (or what we hoped would be the night), we would quietly slip into the kitchen, grab two bowls, and share a container of banana pudding from Wegmans.
It was our sweet treat.
Our tiny exhale.
Our reminder that even in the raw, overwhelming, beautiful chaos… we were still us.
Some nights we were delirious from no sleep.
Other nights we were laughing and talking like we hadn’t seen each other in days.
And sometimes we were so tired we’d just sit side-by-side, passing the bowl back and forth while binge-watching Tires on Netflix.
Those evenings were sacred in their own tender, messy way.
But as time went on, two things hit us:
- Wegmans banana pudding is expensive, and
- It’s not always in stock (and when it wasn’t, it felt devastating in a way only postpartum parents understand).
So one Sunday, I said, “I bet I can make this at home… and in a bigger batch.”
And that’s exactly what I did.
This is the easy, quick, cold-mixing, no-bake banana pudding I started making for us. It’s inexpensive, makes a huge bowl, lasts a few days in the fridge, and tastes just as comforting as the little containers we used to buy, maybe even more so because it holds all those memories of the early days when we were learning how to be parents together.
Lately, this banana pudding has become one of my favorite recipes to bring to summer gatherings. It’s simple, nostalgic, and always the first dessert to disappear. The last time I made it for family, I came home with an empty container, and honestly, that’s my favorite kind of compliment. Feeding people has always been one of my love languages.
Easy Banana Pudding (The Wegmans-Inspired Version)
Serves: a cozy couple for a few nights — or the whole family
Ingredients
- 1 box instant vanilla pudding mix 3.4 oz
- 2 cups cold milk
- 1 can sweetened condensed milk 14 0z
- 1 (8 oz) tub Cool Whip, thawed. *optional get a second tub to top with cool whip
- 3 medium bananas, sliced
- 1 box Nilla wafers
Instructions
1. Make the pudding base
In a large bowl, whisk together the instant pudding, cold milk, and sweetened condensed milk until smooth and thick.
2. Fold in the Cool Whip
Use a spatula and gently fold the Cool Whip into the pudding mixture until fully combined and fluffy.
3. Layer it up
In an 8×8 or 9×9 dish, layer:
- Nilla wafers
- Banana slices
- Pudding mixture
Repeat until you reach the top. Then if you want, top with more cool whip and crushed wafers.
I’ll be honest…I don’t usually layer it neatly. Most of the time I just mix everything together. It feels very on-brand for this season of life: a little messy, a little imperfect, and still really, really good.
4. Chill
Refrigerate for at least 2 hours—overnight is best.
A Final Note
If you’re in a postpartum season right now, maybe you found this recipe at 10 p.m. while rocking a baby in the dark, just know you’re not alone. Those nights are long and tender and stretching. They are full of contradictions: joy and grief, love and overwhelm, softness and survival.
And sometimes something as simple as a bowl of banana pudding shared with the person you love becomes a little anchor in all of it.
I hope this one brings sweetness to your home the way it did to ours. 💛
