Getting Out of Your Comfort Zone

I am writing this blog based off of an experience I had. I was in a yoga class, and the instructor was saying the only way we can grow as people is to get out of our comfort zone and try new things. She said we need to find things that challenge our mind, body, and spirit.

This talk really resonated with me. In that very moment, I was the embodiment of her words. The yoga moves were a challenge to my mind, my body, and my spirit but, it wasn’t about what I was doing in the class itself. You see, I had never done that type of yoga before or even been to that studio, or any yoga studio for that matter.

I’ve tried a few yoga classes in my old gym here and there but, when it comes to yoga, I am a novice at best. I recently moved to a new area and found a cute studio that I could walk to and wanted to give it a shot. Well, I did, and if I’m being honest, I felt way over my head. The class was chanting and moving while I lagged behind. The instructor had to spend extra time helping to position me, and I found the class really challenging. The whole time I was thinking about how terrible I was doing.

Instead of being embarrassed, I am patting myself on the back. Well, I’m trying to, my arms are still sore. Like I said, I had never done a class like that before, but that didn’t stop me from walking into this studio, in my new town where I don’t know anyone and going for it. Like the teacher said, I was out of my comfort zone, and I was growing as a person.

I know for some people trying something new and out of your wheelhouse is beyond intimidating but I am here to encourage you to try those things that you have been thinking about. It may seem scary, but you will survive, just like I did.

So, if you have been sitting on the sidelines, watching opportunities pass you by, it’s time to get out there!

Go to that new restaurant
Join that club
Try that gym class

You got this!Tell me something you’ve done that was scary at first, but in the end, you were happy that you did it. What do you think I should try next?

Thanks for reading!

Fantastic post about an important reminder!!! Blogging for me is still a new experience even though I have been doing it about a year! There are times I am still not comfortable promoting my blog and putting my thoughts out into the world…I’m not giving up though!

I like to try new and different things. When we were in Iceland I tried several different local meals that were totally different from what we normally eat.

I’m really glad you managed to get out of your comfort zone, I had a similar experience to you when I first started Pilates. It was obvious to me that everyone there went on a weekly basis and were all very experienced, and there was me – a newbie who was really not flexible at all. But I kept at it, and felt really good at the end of my first session!

Cycle/Spin classes intimidated me at first. However, the more classes that I took the more I became obsessed with cycling/spin classes. You should definitely check out a cycle/spin class soon!

YESSS! We move a lot (military family), so every time we’re in a new place I have to challenge myself to get out there and try something or some place that’s new. It’s hard when we crave comfort, but in the end it’s always worth it.
